A critical stakeholders’ meeting convened in Maiduguri on Tuesday, March 4th, 2025, to galvanise support for increased women’s political participation in Borno State and accelerate the passage of relevant legislation.
The event, held at Fawwaz and Hannif Nigeria Limited, focused on addressing the barriers hindering women’s involvement in politics.
Abigail Nuhu, Program Officer for RHHF, opened the meeting with a call for collective action. “It is our shared responsibility to ensure equal opportunities for all, enabling everyone to contribute to national development,” she stated.
Ambassador Ahmed Shehu, Chairman of the North East Civil Society Organisation, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the need for stakeholders to prioritise women’s political empowerment.

“We must address systemic issues,” he asserted, “including the timing of political meetings, which often occur late at night, making it difficult for women to participate.” He called for an amendment of the political system.
Aisha Abubakar, Chairperson of WPP, urged for greater consideration of women in political appointments and elections. “We need to see more women in key decision-making positions,” she stressed.
Dr. Zannah Bogoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Regional Reintegration, highlighted the historical and contemporary significance of women’s roles in Borno State.
“Women have always held positions of influence,” he reminded attendees, citing examples such as the Magira and the role of women in the Shehu of Borno’s court. He reinforced the importance of recognising their contributions.
The meeting drew a diverse audience, including traditional rulers and district heads, underscoring the broad support for women’s political advancement.
Two key presentations were delivered: Barrister Fatsuma Salisu addressed women’s constitutional rights, while Comrade Abdulkarim Haruna of the Borno State Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) discussed the crucial role of women in political participation.
The event concluded with a group photograph, symbolising the united front of stakeholders committed to fostering greater gender equality in Borno State’s political landscape.
