The Taraba State government has implemented a ban on the movement of cattle in and out of the Mambilla Plateau in Sardauna Local Government Area.
This decision follows a severe outbreak of hemorrhagic septicaemia, a fatal disease affecting livestock.
The outbreak has already resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 cattle.
To address the crisis, the state government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has issued alerts to neighbouring states to implement preventive measures.
Vaccination and treatment programs are currently underway in the affected region.
Dr. Nathan Francis, the Taraba State Director of Veterinary Services, emphasised the importance of joint efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread to Cameroon and other nearby areas. He announced that the state government has procured antibiotics and is distributing them on the Mambilla Plateau.
Additionally, a large-scale vaccination campaign is being initiated to cover the Mambilla Plateau and neighbouring regions such as Gashaka, Kurmi, and parts of Takum.
Dr. Francis assured the public that the disease does not pose a threat to humans and that meat is safe for consumption when properly cooked.
He also confirmed the deployment of the Federal Government’s National Rapid Response Team to support the state’s efforts to control the outbreak.
