Team Borno’s beach volleyball squad has secured a coveted spot in the quarterfinals of the National Sports Festival, currently underway in Ogun State.
The team’s impressive turnaround, following an initial setback, has been a highlight of the tournament’s preliminary rounds.
Playing at the MKO Abiola National Stadium Beach Volleyball pitch, Team Borno demonstrated remarkable resilience after losing their opening matches to formidable opponents, Team Kano and Team Ogun, both by identical 2-0 scorelines.
However, the Borno contingent quickly found their rhythm, delivering dominant performances to defeat Team Bayelsa and Team Osun, both with convincing 2-0 victories.
Their triumph over Team Osun, with set scores of 21-11 and 21-14, sealed their progression to the knockout stage.
Coach Sunday Donald (Piron) of Team Borno expressed immense gratitude for his team’s qualification. “We are incredibly thankful to God for this opportunity to reach the quarterfinals,” Donald stated, acknowledging the tough competition they faced.
“Our players showed incredible determination, especially after a challenging start against some of the top teams in the festival.”
Donald also extended his appreciation to the Borno State Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Poverty Alleviation for their unwavering support.
“We owe a great deal to Alhaji Bura Mustapha Alesadiyaye, the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Sports Council, for his encouragement and guidance,” he said.
“And the support from Honourable Commissioner Comrade Saiina Buba has been instrumental in our journey.”
Team Borno is now set to face Team Kaduna in a highly anticipated quarterfinal clash as they continue their quest for a medal at the National Sports Festival.
