President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has requested the Senate to terminate the appointments of suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) due to alleged gross misconduct during the 2022 gubernatorial election.
In a letter read at plenary by Senate President Goodwill Akpabio on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, President Tinubu cited Section 157(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, seeking the Senate’s consideration and vote to terminate the appointments.
The affected RECs are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto).
According to President Tinubu, the three commissioners have been suspended since March 2022 for misconduct, predating the current administration.
“The Senate is invited to note that the three resident electoral commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2022.”
“While I trust that the Senate will consider this request expeditiously,” President Tinubu stated in the letter.
He concluded by expressing his highest considerations to the distinguished senators and the Senate President.
