President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian editors to uphold the highest standards of truth, fairness, and responsibility in their work, emphasizing that a free and ethical press remains vital to national cohesion and democratic stability.
The president made the call during his opening address at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ Annual Conference held on Wednesday at the State House, Abuja.
Tinubu commended the media’s historic role in defending democracy and promoting public accountability, describing journalism as an “instrument of national awakening.”
“From the early newspapers that challenged colonial injustice to the voices that stood firm during military rule, Nigerian journalism has always defended reason, dignity, and progress,” the president said.
He urged editors to balance press freedom with responsibility, warning that misinformation and cynicism could erode national unity.
“A democracy is sustained not only by elections and laws but also by the integrity of public conversation. Verification must be your anchor; balance must be your principle,” Tinubu advised.
The president acknowledged the rise of social media and its impact on information dissemination, noting that the editorial gatekeeping function is now more important than ever to counter falsehood and promote truth.
Tinubu also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to economic reform and stability, stating that ongoing measures are aimed at “placing the economy on a strong and enduring footing.”
“We have taken steps to restore macroeconomic balance, encourage investment, and rebuild confidence,” he said, adding that growth must translate into real improvements in citizens’ lives.
He called for partnership between the government, private sector, civil society, and the media to build a united nation.
“Nation-building requires trust and shared understanding. Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair,” Tinubu said.
The president urged editors to remain courageous and principled, reminding them that their tone and standards influence Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“Your work matters. The standards you enforce and the courage with which you defend the truth will shape the direction of our national journey,” he concluded.
