Justin Trudeau, Canada’s 7th longest-serving prime minister and a charismatic leader, has announced his resignation as Prime Minister a few minutes ago.
ย
Trudeau, who rode the wave of popularity in 2015, has been under intense pressure from his Liberal Party caucus and the majority of Canadians to leave office after the economy began to show signs of weakness following the programmes put in place during the Covid-19 pandemic.
ย
In his resignation press conference, a few minutes ago, Trudeau announced that he will be proroguing parliament until March 24 and that the Governor-General has kindly endorsed that request.
ย
Trudeau, a charismatic leader who described himself as a dogged leader and a fighter, says he is resigning in the best interest of Canada and to ensure that Nigerians have a clear choice.
ย
In the past year, the Canadian budget has run on a deficit. Trudeau’s immigration policy has flooded the Canadian landscape with immigrants with scant regard to their social needs, such as housing and adequate health care.ย
ย
Of late, Mr. Trudeau has also come under severe criticism for the way he has treated two powerful women, known to have been close to him.
ย
They are former Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould, an Indigenous woman, and lately his deputy prime minister, former journalist Christa Freeland, who has ties with Ukraine.
ย
Freeland resigned two weeks ago after it became clear that Trudeau was bent on removing her as finance minister before announcing another freebie to Canadians.
ย
Her resignation led to Trudeau’s rival, Pierre Poilievre, calling on him to resign.
ย
A few quotes of Trudeau in an emotion-laden voice: “I cared deeply about Canadians. I intend to resign as party leader and as PM after the party would have selected its leader after a rigorous process. I cannot continue as party leader if I have to fight internal pressure; I cannot be the best candidate. This country deserves a real choice.”
ย
Canadians believe that they need a firm and respectable leader who has the support of his party and citizens before the swearing-in of Donald Trump, who does not get along either with Trudeau or Freeland.
ย
Trump already says he would impose a 25% tax on Canadian and Mexican goods except both countries do their best to curb drug and human trafficking.
ย
The amount of drugs that seep through Canada’s border with America is negligible, although most of the 300,000-600,000 undocumented migrants currently in Canada hope to get to America one way or the other.
ย
The struggle for who would replace Trudeau early enough to be able to fight the Conservatives is bound to be an epic battle.
