UK Praises Zulum’s Insurgency Fight, Pledges Continued Support for Borno Stabilisation

The United Kingdom has lauded Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum for his resolute efforts in combating insurgency and supporting the people of Borno State.

The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Atkinson to Maiduguri on Monday.

Atkinson acknowledged Governor Zulum’s commitment to securing a prosperous future for those displaced by the prolonged insurgency.

“On behalf of the British Government, I recognise the effort of His Excellency, the Governor, in tackling insurgency and supporting the people of Borno State, particularly aiming to secure a prosperous future for the people displaced by insurgency,” she stated.

She further reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting peace, stability, and sustainable solutions in the region.

“I want to reaffirm the UK’s commitment to supporting peace, stability and sustainable solutions, particularly through the ongoing regional stabilisation facility,” Atkinson added.

Responding on behalf of Governor Zulum, the Secretary to the Borno State Government expressed deep appreciation for the UK government’s ongoing partnership and support.

“With the UK government to start with, we have quite a number of very strong partnerships. His Excellency appreciates it, and he specifically instructed me to convey the special message of appreciation,” he said.

The meeting, held at the governor’s office, saw the attendance of several key Borno State officials, including commissioners for environment, education, works and housing, transport and energy, and intergovernmental and special duties.

Also present were the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, Senior Technical Assistant, Political to the Governor, Permanent Secretary of Political and Cabinet, and the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Agency for Coordination of Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response (BOACSDHR).

The UK’s continued support, particularly through the regional stabilisation facility, highlights the international community’s recognition of the challenges faced by Borno State and the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability.
