UN Security Adviser Seeks Stronger Military Collaboration with OPHK Maiduguri

The Chief Security Adviser of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) Nigeria, Mr Senyo Kufe, has paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri, seeking stronger collaboration in security and humanitarian management across the region.

This was disclosed in a statement by Sani Uba, Lieutenant Colonel, Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI โ€” November 11, 2025.

According to Uba, the visit, which took place on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, was part of his ongoing nationwide familiarisation and operational assessment tour across Nigeria.

Mr Kufe, who assumed office in August 2025, described the Northeastas โ€œthe engine room of Nigeriaโ€™s security operationsโ€, stressing the regionโ€™s strategic importance in sustaining national and humanitarian stability.

โ€œWithout the military, UN staff cannot stand on their own in the Northeast,โ€ Kufe said, commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their professionalism and continued support to UNDSS activities.

He emphasised that the visit was aimed at reinforcing the bond between the UN and the Theatre Command while gaining firsthand insight into security realities in the region.

Also speaking, Mr Udit Mehta, the UNDSS Area Security Adviser and Field Coordination Officer for the Northeast, applauded the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, for his leadership, collaboration, and unwavering support to the UN.

โ€œThis engagement seeks to deepen cooperation and ensure the safety and security of UN personnel working in the Northeast,โ€ Mehta noted.

Responding, Major General Abubakar reaffirmed the militaryโ€™s commitment to supporting UNDSS operations, highlighting ongoing counterinsurgency efforts and humanitarian rescue missions.

He stressed the importance of continuous civil-military relations and collaboration with international partners in tackling emerging security challenges.

The meeting focused on improving coordination in emergency preparedness, disaster response, information sharing, and security management, with both sides agreeing to expand joint training programmes and strengthen operational safety frameworks.

The visit featured the presentation of souvenirs, the signing of the visitorsโ€™ register, and a group photograph. Mr Kufe was accompanied by UNDSS officials, including Security Analyst Mr Christian Munteanu and Field Security Associate Major Nuhu Mantana (Rtd).

Senior officers of OPHK, including Deputy Theatre Commander Air Vice Marshal Essen Efanga, component commanders, and principal staff officers, were also in attendance.
