The Yobe State Police Command has expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), particularly the rape and abuse of minors across the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, by SP Dungus Abdulkarim, Police Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Police Force, Yobe State Command, November 11, 2025, the command revealed that it has recorded 25 cases of rape since September 2025, with a disturbing majority involving victims below nine years of age.
Highlighting the trend, the police cited several recent arrests that underscore the growing threat:
Jakusko: A 20-year-old man was arrested on November 9, 2025, for allegedly luring a four-year-old girl into a room and sexually assaulting her. Medical examinations confirmed severe injuries.
Fika: On the same day, a 23-year-old grinding machine operator was apprehended for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl he lured into his shop.
Tarmuwa: Two men, both aged 22, were arrested for the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl while she was returning from a Maulud celebration. The suspects were tracked and reportedly confessed to the crime.
According to the police, 28 suspects have been arrested in connection with the reported 25 cases.
Ten of these cases are already being prosecuted in court, while others are under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, condemned the โheinous actsโ and directed all officers to handle GBV-related cases with utmost professionalism and sensitivity.
โNo offender will be spared. All perpetrators will face the full weight of the law,โ CP Ado warned.
He urged parents, guardians, community leaders, and religious institutions to remain vigilant and to work closely with the police in protecting children from sexual predators โlurking within communities.โ
The Command also shared key safety guidelines for parents and caregivers:
Always know your childrenโs whereabouts and who they are with.
Educate children on the concept of โSafe Touchโ and โUnsafe Touch.โ
Avoid leaving young children unattended or in the care of unfamiliar persons.
Report any suspicious behavior immediatelyโsilence enables offenders.
The Yobe Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for victims and preventing further violations through continuous community engagement, awareness campaigns, and swift prosecution of offenders.
