Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has called for a “complete overhaul” of police welfare across Nigeria, simultaneously pledging immediate land allocation for a new Police Trust Fund (NPTF) housing estate in the state capital.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by Governor Lawalโs spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris.
According to the statement, the governor said this during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Mohammed F. Sheidu, at the Government House in Gusau on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Lawal also restated his administration’s commitment to supporting effective police operations and improving the welfare of officers.
He noted his experience on the Presidential Committee on police reform and lamented the poor state of facilities.
โIt is heartbreaking when you see the state of the police and still expect them to perform miracles,โ he stated.
โHonestly, I am one of those advocating for a complete overhaul of police welfare if we genuinely want them to operate effectively.โ
To address immediate infrastructural needs, the governor directed prompt action on housing land.
โI am glad the Commissioner for Housing is here with us, as we need to start work on land issues now,โ Governor Lawal said.
“We will identify suitable land to be transferred to the Police Trust Fund so they can move forward with the police housing estate project. We will provide the land immediately.โ
He added that his administration is already renovating the Zamfara police headquarters and constructing structures at the Zamfara Mobile Command.
Earlier, the NPTF Executive Secretary, Mr Sheidu, commended Governor Lawal for his cooperation and support regarding police welfare and infrastructure projects in Zamfara State.
