Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has called upon Muslim faithful to embrace the virtues of piety, charity, and moderation during the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking at the annual Ramadan lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife on Sunday, he emphasised the importance of these values in building a “resilient, patriotic, and charitable citizenry” in Nigeria.
“Ramadan provides us with an opportunity to strengthen our faith and contribute positively to our communities,” Governor Zulum stated, urging Muslims to remain “prayerful, patriotic, and patient” throughout the month.
He also encouraged the promotion of “religious tolerance” and “philanthropic endeavours” to foster unity and understanding.
Professor Badmus Olanrewaju Yusuf, the guest lecturer, addressed the topic of “Navigating Economic Difficulties in Nigeria through Reliance on Allah.”
He called on Muslims to uphold Islamic principles such as “divine reliance,” “equitable resource distribution through Zakat and Sadaqah,” and “compassion for the less privileged.”
He cautioned against “wasteful spending and immoral behaviour” during Ramadan, advocating for “discipline and self-restraint.”
In a gesture of support, Governor Zulum donated ₦50 million to the OAU Muslim Community to aid their Ramadan activities.
“This donation is on behalf of the people and government of Borno State,” he announced, aiming to support “charitable initiatives, fraternity, and communal harmony.”
